Dirigible and aircraft AFL03_aerofilms_b2308

Dirigible and BE2 aircraft, pre-war, no date or location. This small unidentified airship is probably a Royal Navy submarine spotter, flying the white ensign and being attended by a number of naval personnel. The Royal Aircraft Factory BE2 in the foreground was widely used from 1914, most successfully against Zeppelin raiders in 1916, but thereafter was largely used for training. This example is missing its tail fin but retains its rudder and may have been decommissioned. Aerofilms Collection (see Links)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a fascinating moment in aviation history. The image showcases a small unidentified airship, believed to be a Royal Navy submarine spotter, flying the white ensign high above. Surrounding the dirigible are several naval personnel, diligently attending to its needs. In the foreground of the photograph stands a Royal Aircraft Factory BE2 aircraft, widely utilized during World War I. This particular model played a crucial role in defending against Zeppelin raiders in 1916 before transitioning primarily into training purposes. Although this specific BE2 is missing its tail fin, it still proudly displays its rudder. The absence of any date or location information adds an air of mystery to this remarkable snapshot from the Aerofilms Collection by Historic England Archive. It leaves us wondering about the exact circumstances surrounding this unique encounter between two distinct forms of aerial transportation. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to an era when aviation was still in its infancy and possibilities seemed endless. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come since then and how these early pioneers paved the way for modern-day advancements in flight technology. Overall, this print offers us a glimpse into an extraordinary moment where dirigibles and aircraft coexisted harmoniously amidst military operations during World War I.
