EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating stained glass print titled "Death of St Frideswide, 1859" by Edward Coley Burne-Jones depicts a poignant scene within Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford, UK. Created by James Powell & Sons, this masterpiece showcases the patron saint of Oxford, St Frideswide or Frithuswith. The artwork portrays an English princess and abbess who played a significant role in establishing the religious site that later became part of Christ Church. In this neo-gothic piece, we witness a moment filled with mourning and grief as women gather around the deathbed of St Frideswide. The vibrant colors and intricate details characteristic of pre-Raphaelite art movement bring life to this somber scene. The gothic revival style adds an air of solemnity and reverence to the composition. As our eyes explore every corner of this stunning window, we notice elements such as bright ecclesiastical attire contrasting against dark backgrounds. Additionally, there is a subtle inclusion of domesticity with the presence of a garderobe or toilet in one corner—a reminder that even saints are human beings with basic needs. This Victorian-era artwork beautifully captures both the spirituality and humanity surrounding death. It serves as a testament to the enduring power and influence that historical figures like St Frideswide have had on shaping our cultural heritage.
