Hurricane lamps, a beacon of light in the darkness: From the Levant Mine in Cornwall, 1894, to the Gruta da Lapa Doce caves in Brazil, 1908 (or 1909), these iconic lamps have illuminated the way through the most challenging conditions. James McLellan's Storm Lamp, Raymond Manupelli's Fireman's Candle Lamp, and Rex F. Bush's Lamp, each a testament to innovation and necessity. Murray and Priestley's photograph of going down a shaft in Green Lake, and an ice cavern in the winter, beautifully captured by the warm glow of a hurricane lamp. Even during the fuel crisis of 1947, when London offices and shops went dark, the humble hurricane lamp continued to shine.
