EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning artwork, titled "Circumcision of Christ, Left Wing of an Altarpiece, on verso is the Virgin from an Annunciation scene," is a masterpiece by the Flemish artist Pseudo-Jan Wellens de Cock, dating from the early 16th century. The painting is a wing of an altarpiece, with the circumcision of Christ depicted on the front and the Virgin from an Annunciation scene on the reverse. The circumcision scene shows Jesus as an infant lying on a bed, surrounded by his parents, Joseph, and the Virgin Mary, as well as the priest performing the ritual. The expression of tender love and concern on Mary's face as she watches the procedure is a poignant reminder of her role as the mother of God. The scene is rich in symbolism, with the lamb and the open book representing the Old and New Testaments, and the light streaming in from the window symbolizing the divine presence. On the reverse side, the Virgin from an Annunciation scene shows Mary receiving the news from the angel Gabriel that she will give birth to the Son of God. The serene expression on her face and the gentle posture of her body convey the profound significance of the moment. The grisaille of a Sibyl in the background adds an element of prophecy and anticipation. This beautiful oil painting, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, is a testament to the artistic mastery of Pseudo-Jan Wellens de Cock and the rich cultural heritage of Flanders in the Renaissance period. It is currently housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it continues to inspire awe and wonder in visitors from around the world.
