EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th-century oil on canvas painting, titled "The Deluge. Deucalion and Pyrrha," is a masterpiece by the Venetian artist Giulio Carpioni (1613-1678). The artwork is currently housed in the prestigious Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, Italy. The painting depicts the biblical story of the Deluge, or the Great Flood, as told in the Old Testament. According to the myth, Deucalion and Pyrrha were the only survivors of the cataclysmic flood that covered the earth as a result of God's wrath. The couple, who were the descendants of the ancient Greek gods, were instructed to throw the bones of their mother, Pyrrha's mother, over their shoulders to repopulate the earth. In this painting, Carpioni masterfully captures the moment of rebirth and renewal. Deucalion and Pyrrha are shown standing on the ark, gazing out at the vast, watery expanse. In their hands, they hold the bones of their mother, which have transformed into new human beings. Mount Ararat, the legendary resting place of Noah's Ark, can be seen in the background, adding to the biblical and mythological significance of the scene. This artwork is a prime example of the Baroque style, with its dramatic use of light and shadow, intricate details, and rich, vibrant colors. The painting's allegorical representation of the origin of humanity and the power of renewal continues to captivate viewers and inspire artists to this day. Overall, "The Deluge. Deucalion and Pyrrha" is a beautiful and thought-provoking work of art that showcases the depth and complexity of the human experience, as well as the enduring power of mythology and allegory.
