EDITORS COMMENTS
Frances Stuart, Duchess of Richmond and Lennox (1640-1702), was a prominent figure in the English aristocracy during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This striking portrait of the Duchess, created by renowned English engraver Charles Turner in 1810, captures her elegance and beauty in the twilight of her life. The portrait is taken from the collection "Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second," published in London in 1815. Frances Stuart was the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Richmond and Eleanor Sackville, and was raised at the court of King Charles II. She was known for her exceptional beauty and was a favorite of the king, who granted her the title of Duchess of Richmond and Lennox in 1673. The portrait shows the Duchess dressed in the fashionable attire of the time, with a voluminous black gown adorned with lace and a white lace cap covering her elaborate hairstyle. Her hairdo, created by the famous hairstylist Peter Lely or Lilly (Sir Peter van der Faes), features intricate curls and elaborate braids, a popular style among the aristocracy during this period. The portrait also bears the inscription "Obit 1702," indicating that the Duchess had passed away by the time the portrait was created. Despite this, the image remains a testament to her enduring beauty and status as a prominent figure in English history.
