Great Exhibition of 1851 - Progress of the Building in Hyde Park, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Great Exhibition of 1851 - Progress of the Building in Hyde Park, 1850. The progress of the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition, next year, is sufficiently advanced to enable us to commence a series of Illustrations by which we hope to inform our readers of the general character and details of the structure, and also of the various ingenious modes and contrivances adopted by the contractors for executing the works with the greatest certainty and rapidity.
Our view exhibits the commencement of the erection of the central avenue, which will present a corridor, uninterrupted, 1848 feet in length, extending from the east to the west end of the building. The most difficult and complicated part of the work is that which is to cover in the old elm trees, more than 90 feet high; and the contractors have wisely determined to execute this part in the first in
stance. Our view is close to this spot'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the progress of the construction of the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park, London, as of the year 1850. The Crystal Palace, an architectural marvel of its time, was a temporary structure built to house the world's finest examples of art, industry, and innovation from around the globe. The photograph captures the early stages of the building process, with the central avenue already taking shape. Measuring 1,848 feet in length, the central avenue would extend from the east to the west end of the palace, creating a continuous corridor for visitors to explore. The most challenging aspect of the construction was the coverage of the old elm trees, some of which were over 90 feet high. Ingeniously, the contractors decided to tackle this complex part of the project first. The photograph offers a close-up view of this area, providing a glimpse into the intricacies of the construction process. The Illustrated London News, a prominent British weekly newspaper, published a series of illustrations to document the progress of the Crystal Palace's construction. This photograph is likely one of those illustrations, capturing the excitement and anticipation surrounding the upcoming Great Exhibition. The meticulous planning and execution of the project are evident in the photograph, making it an essential historical record of this remarkable architectural achievement.
