EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a group of exquisite silver and silver-gilt spoons from the seventeenth century, on display at The Loan Collection in South-Kensington in 1862. Each spoon tells its own unique story, with intricate designs and ornate details that showcase the craftsmanship of the time.
From a silver-gilt spoon adorned with floriated ornamentation to a silver folding-fork and spoon combined featuring a figure of Cupid, each piece is a work of art in its own right. The collection also includes spoons with religious motifs such as saints and angels, as well as one with a ship in full sail on its stem.
One particularly striking piece is a massive silver-gilt spoon chased in high relief with scenes of the Entombment and Crucifixion, surrounded by inscriptions and numerous figures spiraling around the stem. An angel holding a chalice sits atop this magnificent creation, adding an extra touch of elegance to an already impressive design.
These spoons not only serve as functional utensils but also as pieces of history that reflect the artistic styles and cultural influences of their time. They are truly treasures worth admiring for their beauty and historical significance.
