Marriage of the Count de Paris with the Princess Isabelle d'Orleans: triumphal arch at Esher, 1864. '...Louis Philippe Albert d'Orleans, the Count de Paris, son of the Duke of Orleans and grandson of King Louis Philippe, was married to his first cousin, Princess Maria Isabella Francesca d'Assisi, daughter of the Duke de Montpensier, and niece, by her mother's side, to the Queen of Spain...After the ceremony...the young Count and Countess de Paris entered their carriage to return to Claremont, amidst all manner of festive demonstrations - cheering, and firing of cannon, and ringing of bells - in the little town of Kingston-upon-Thames. The road all the way from Kingston, through Esher, to Claremont was crowded with people; and in some places it was adorned with banners and triumphal arches, one of which, that near Esher, was of a costly as well as tasteful design...[Our illustration] is a view of this triumphal arch, with the carrriages approaching from Claremont on their road to Kingston...The guests, about one hundred in number, were entertained at breakfast under a marquee at the back of Claremont House; after which the bride and bridegroom left home to spend their honeymoon in the north of England'. **A Royal Celebration: The Marriage of Count de Paris and Princess Isabelle d'Orleans**
In this exquisite print, a triumphal arch at Esher stands tall as a testament to the joyous union between Louis Philippe Albert d'Orleans, Count de Paris, and his cousin, Princess Maria Isabella Francesca d'Assisi. The year was 1864, and the festivities surrounding their marriage were nothing short of spectacular.
As seen in this illustration from "Illustrated London News", a grand procession wound its way through Esher on its journey to Kingston-upon-Thames, where the newlyweds would return to Claremont House for breakfast with their guests. The arch itself is a masterpiece of design and craftsmanship, adorned with banners and decorations that reflect the joyous atmosphere.
The marriage was marked by widespread celebrations throughout the town, featuring cheering crowds, cannon fire, and ringing bells. This print captures just one moment in this grand celebration - the approach of the bride's carriage to Esher's triumphal arch. A true snapshot of a royal wedding at its most regal and resplendent.
