Mary Queen of Scots Room at Holyrood, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Mary Queen of Scots Room at Holyrood, 1850. Interior of the royal Palace of Holyrood, Edinburgh, Scotland. The ceiling, as far as the moulded compartments are concerned, is in its original character...The compartments...are of diamond and hexagonal form, the diamond spaces containing circles, whence issue four sceptres, the circles having "J.R." and "M. R." in them alternately. The hexagons are ornamented by painted borders, with the St. Andrew's Cross, St. George's Cross, the portcullis, the harp, the rose, and the crests of England and Scotland...The bedstead, covered with red damask, is of the middle of the 17th century...The doorway having portion of the tapestry drawn on one side, leads into the little room in which Mary sat with Rizzio at supper, when Darnley, Douglas, and the armed confederates seized the unhappy man and assassinated him'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Queen of Scots' Room at Holyrood, 1850: A Glimpse into the Past Step back in time with this 19th-century print of Mary Queen of Scots' Room at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, Scotland. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a rare glimpse into the opulent interior of this historic royal residence. The room's most striking feature is the intricately decorated ceiling, which remains largely unchanged from its original state. The diamond and hexagonal compartments are adorned with symbols of the Scottish and English monarchies, including the St. Andrew's Cross, St. George's Cross, the portcullis, the harp, the rose, and the crests of England and Scotland. The moulded borders add an elegant touch to the space, while the use of natural light illuminates the room's grandeur. The room's centerpiece is a sumptuous four-poster bed, draped in red damask fabric and dating back to the middle of the 17th century. The doorway, with a portion of an Aubusson tapestry drawn to one side, leads into the little room where Mary sat with her secretary David Rizzio at supper, before his tragic assassination at the hands of Lord Darnley, Douglas, and their confederates. This print, from the extensive collection of The Print Collector, invites us to imagine the lives of the royal inhabitants of this historic palace and offers a fascinating glimpse into the decorative styles and architectural features of the 19th century. Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of the past, this image is sure to captivate and inspire.
