Memorial to the late Marquess of Londonderry, in course of erection on Scrabo Hill, County Down, Ireland, 1857. Folly in Scottish baronial style, in memory of Charles Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Memorial to the Late Marquess of Londonderry, under construction on Scrabo Hill in County Down, Ireland, in 1857. The monument, a Scottish baronial-style folly, is dedicated to Charles Vane, the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. The tower, which stands at an impressive height of 135 feet, is being built from the rough rubble-stone (basalt) found on the hill's summit. The site chosen for the tower is the highest point of Scrabo Hill, over 500 feet above the level of Lough Strangford. Not only does the tower serve as a striking object from various parts of the country, but it also provides accommodation for a custodian. The Memorial to the Late Marquess of Londonderry is an impressive architectural feat, reminiscent of a Scottish chateau. The tower's design, which includes battlements and fortifications, reflects the Scottish baronial style that was popular during the 19th century. The monument is a testament to the grandeur and wealth of the Marquess of Londonderry, who was a prominent figure in British society during this period. The photograph, taken from "Illustrated London News," provides a unique glimpse into the construction process of this monumental structure. The image captures the essence of the era, with its black and white tones and intricate details. The photograph also highlights the rugged terrain of County Down and the beauty of the Irish countryside. Overall, this photograph is a fascinating historical record of a bygone era and a reminder of the rich architectural heritage of Ireland.
