EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 7" from Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki and Eberhard Siegfried Henne's "History of the Middle Ages," created in 1793, presents a powerful and dramatic depiction of Joan of Arc, the legendary heroine and martyr of France. The black and white etching captures the intensity and courage of the young woman as she rides her horse into battle, leading the French army to victory against the English. Joan of Arc, also known as Jeanne d'Arc or La Pucelle, was born in eastern France in the late 15th century. She claimed to have received divine messages from saints, inspiring her to lead the French army against the English during the Hundred Years War. Her military successes, including the relief of Orléans and the coronation of Charles VII, earned her the title "Maid of Orléans." However, Joan's victories were short-lived. She was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English, who put her on trial for heresy and cross-dressing. Despite her denials, she was found guilty and burned at the stake in 1431. Her martyrdom became a symbol of French nationalism and her cause for canonization was taken up by the Catholic Church. Chodowiecki and Henne's etching captures the essence of Joan's story, with the figure of the young woman dominating the composition. Her fierce expression and determined posture convey her unwavering belief in her mission, while the smoke and flames in the background suggest the chaos and danger of the battlefield. The lettering at the bottom of the plate identifies her as "Joan of Arc, Maid of Orleans," and notes her martyrdom. This historic artwork is a testament to the enduring legacy of Joan of Arc and the impact she had on European history and culture. Today, it is part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to inspire and captivate audiences.
