Swinhoe's Pheasant, lately added to the collection of the Zoological Society of London, 1865. Creator: Dalziel Brothers
Swinhoe's Pheasant, lately added to the collection of the Zoological Society of London, 1865. '...a newly-discovered species, which has been worthily named after its discoverer, Mr. Robert Swinhoe, F.Z.S., her Majesty's Consul in Formosa. "Few of her Majesty's Consuls," says Mr. Gould..."have more assiduously availed themselves of the opportunities afforded them of collecting the birds of the distant regions in which they have been located than Mr. Swinhoe...It is but a just tribute, then, to the merits of this gentleman that so remarkable and beautiful a bird should be named in his honour." To the same gentleman the Zoological Society are likewise indebted for the male specimen of this bird now in their collection, from which this present figure is taken, and which is the only example of this species which has as yet been imported into Europe. In its native state, Swinhoe's pheasant inhabits the high jungles of the interior of the little-known island of Formosa, rarely descending into the lower hills. In size it is somewhat smaller than the common silver pheasant, which it also resembles in its red wattles and in the form of its tail'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865

A Rare Gem Added to Our Collection - Swinhoe's Pheasant (Phasianus swinhoii)
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisite print, courtesy of the esteemed Dalziel Brothers, we are delighted to showcase a newly-discovered species that has taken its rightful place in our collection at the Zoological Society of London. This stunning image captures the majesty of Swinhoe's Pheasant, named in honor of Mr. Robert Swinhoe, Her Majesty's Consul in Formosa.
Few individuals have made as significant contributions to ornithology as Mr. Swinhoe, who has tirelessly collected specimens from distant regions during his tenure abroad. It is only fitting that this remarkable bird should bear his name and be a testament to his dedication.
This print depicts the male specimen of Swinhoe's Pheasant, which was kindly donated by Mr. Swinhoe himself. As the sole example of its species in Europe, it offers us a unique opportunity to study and appreciate this beautiful creature up close.
Native to the high jungles of Formosa, these pheasants rarely venture into lower elevations, making them an elusive sight for even the most seasoned naturalists. Measuring slightly smaller than the common silver pheasant, Swinhoe's Pheasant boasts striking red wattles and a tail that echoes its more familiar counterpart.
This print is taken from "Illustrated London News" (1865) and serves as a testament to our ongoing commitment to preserving and sharing knowledge of the natural world. We are thrilled to add this rare gem to our collection, where it will be cherished by generations of zoologists, scientists, and enthusiasts alike.
