The War in Bhootan: view of Buxa Dooars, 1865. Creator: Unknown
The War in Bhootan: view of Buxa Dooars, 1865. Engraving of a sketch by Mr. Gregory. '...it appears from the latest Indian news that the war against Bhootan is about to be renewed, and we shall probably soon hear of an advance into that country...The town of Buxa Dooars, which looks rather like an inconsiderable hamlet, is perched on a ledge of rock in a deep recess of the mountains, commanding the road that leads to the plains beyond the British frontier. The capital city is Poonakha, which lies farther to the north. Here the Deb and Dhurm Rajahs, forming the ruling Durbar, or Council of Chieftains, are preparing to resist the British invasion; while Tongso Penlow the most influential of those potentates, holds out in Eastern Bhootan, notwithstanding the capture of Dewangir. The force to be sent is to consist of 7000 troops, 1000 of which are to be European soldiers, and it is intended to start early in October. Great difficulties are anticipated from the nature of the country, which admits of only "single-file marching."...The distance which the invading force will have to traverse is about 120 miles. As a matter of course, this country will have to be permanently held, subject to the perils from disease that threaten the present force'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865

EDITORS COMMENTS
**The War in Bhootan: A Fierce Confrontation**
This haunting engraving, created by an unknown artist in 1865, captures a pivotal moment in the war between British forces and the ruling Durbar of Chieftains in Bhootan. The photograph shows Buxa Dooars, a strategic town perched on a ledge of rock amidst treacherous mountains. This remote outpost commands the road to the plains beyond the British frontier, making it a crucial stronghold for both sides.
As tensions escalate and war looms once more, British forces prepare to march into Bhootan with an army of 7,000 troops - including 1,000 European soldiers. The journey will be arduous, traversing over 120 miles through unforgiving terrain that allows only single-file marching. Disease threatens the very survival of this expedition.
This historic image serves as a poignant reminder of the brutal conflicts that have shaped global history. As we gaze upon Buxa Dooars and its rugged surroundings, we are transported to an era marked by imperialism, conquest, and resistance - a testament to humanity's enduring capacity for conflict and resilience in the face of adversity.
