Fulham toll house OFH01_01_01_f02_16
Old Putney Bridge, Fulham, Hammersmith and Fulham, Greater London. The north end of the old Putney Bridge with the Fulham toll house in the centre of the view and Willow Bank house beside the Thames to the right.
This bridge, also known as Fulham Bridge, dated from 1729. It was badly damaged by a river barge in 1870. It was repaired but its days were numbered and in 1880 work began on a replacement. Shortly after completion of the new crossing in 1886, the old bridge and toll house, seen here, were demolished

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by William O Field takes us back in time to the enchanting era of the 19th century. The image showcases the north end of the old Putney Bridge, also known as Fulham Bridge, nestled in Hammersmith and Fulham, Greater London. Standing proudly at its center is the iconic Fulham toll house, a charming reminder of a bygone era. To add to this picturesque scene, Willow Bank house gracefully stands beside the Thames on the right side of the frame. The tranquil waterscape reflects both structures with remarkable clarity, creating a serene ambiance that transports viewers into a world untouched by modernity. However, history tells us that this bridge's fate was sealed. In 1870, it suffered significant damage from a river barge collision but was dutifully repaired. Yet its days were numbered; work began on a replacement in 1880 and was completed six years later. Sadly, shortly after completion of the new crossing in 1886, this beloved old bridge and toll house met their demise and were demolished forever. Field's masterful composition captures not only architectural beauty but also hints at an idyllic way of life during Victorian times. With rowing boats dotting the river and calm reflections shimmering beneath them, one can almost hear echoes of laughter and whispers from those who once traversed these historic waters. This print serves as an invaluable window into our rich heritage—a testament to how even fleeting moments frozen in time can evoke powerful emotions
