Earthworks, Shap 28376_051

Medieval grange and post medieval lime kiln in Shap, Cumbria. This image shows the remains of a lime kiln in Cumbria which would have produced quick lime by burning limestone. Quick lime was used to make lime putty for building and to increase the fertility of agricultural land. Although the location of the lime kiln was well-known, aerial photographs provided a different perspective, revealing a pattern of earth covered ruins of buildings and walls which were there before the kiln. This was probably a medieval monastic farm called a grange, perhaps associated with nearby Shap Abbey

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Earthworks, Shap 28376_051" takes us on a journey back in time to the medieval era in Cumbria. The image showcases the fascinating remains of a lime kiln nestled amidst the picturesque landscape. This lime kiln played a crucial role in producing quick lime by burning limestone, which served various purposes such as creating lime putty for construction and enhancing agricultural fertility. What makes this photograph truly remarkable is its ability to unveil hidden secrets from centuries ago. Aerial photography has provided an alternative perspective, revealing a mesmerizing pattern of earth-covered ruins of buildings and walls that predate the existence of the lime kiln. These remnants are believed to be part of a medieval monastic farm known as a grange, possibly associated with the nearby Shap Abbey. Dave MacLeod's keen eye captures not only the physical beauty but also sheds light on historical significance through his lens. The juxtaposition between ancient ruins and industrial structures creates an intriguing narrative about human ingenuity and adaptation over time. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking image, we are reminded of our connection to history and how it continues to shape our present-day world. It serves as a testament to both archaeological exploration and aerial photography's power in unraveling untold stories buried beneath layers of time.
