EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Focus Cinema in Crewe, Cheshire East, as dusk settles over the town. The illuminated billboard stands out against the darkening sky, adding a touch of magic to this historic building. Originally designed as the Odeon Cinema by Budge Reid of Harry W. Weedons practice, this architectural gem opened its doors to moviegoers in July 1937. Throughout its existence, it served as a hub for entertainment and brought joy to countless visitors. In October 1975, Brent Walker took ownership of the cinema and rebranded it as the Focus Cinema. Under new management, it continued to provide an independent cinema experience that delighted film enthusiasts from near and far. Sadly, after years of bringing stories to life on its silver screen, the Focus Cinema closed its doors in May 1983. Just a few months later, in September 1983, this beloved landmark was demolished forever. Norman Walley's photograph immortalizes this piece of cinematic history and reminds us of the role such establishments played in our cultural heritage during the 20th century. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back to an era when going to see a movie was not just about watching films but also about experiencing moments that would stay with us forever.
