EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a devastating bombing raid on The Great Hall in Norwich during World War II. Taken in 1942, the image reveals the first-floor room of this historic medieval building located at Flowerpot Yard, Oak Street, in Norwich, Norfolk. The Great Hall, a hall house with a rich history, was severely damaged during the Blitz when an incendiary bomb ignited a fire that partly burnt out the structure. The remnants of the bomb damage are evident in the photo, with debris and rubble scattered across the floor, and the intricate arches and stonework bearing the scars of the destruction. The once grand and ornate interior now lies in ruins, a poignant reminder of the loss and devastation wrought by the war. Despite the destruction, The Great Hall has since been restored and now holds the distinction of being a Grade II listed building, a testament to its historical significance and resilience.
