On 14th November 1963, the retail market at the Bull Ring development was opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Alderman Dr. Louis Glass, JP. The new retail market replaced the old Market Hall building, which was originally built in 1835 but had suffered serious damage from an air strike in the Second World War. The general section of the new market housed 154 stalls, with a further 42 in the separate fish and poultry section

1960s Commerce Food Market People Shopping Shopping Centre Stalls

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant atmosphere of the fish market at Bull Ring Centre in Birmingham, West Midlands. Taken on the day it opened to the public, shoppers can be seen bustling around the market stalls, eagerly selecting their fresh seafood. On 14th November 1963, a significant moment in Birmingham's history unfolded as Alderman Dr. Louis Glass, JP, the Lord Mayor of Birmingham at that time, inaugurated the new retail market at Bull Ring. This marked a remarkable transformation from its predecessor - Market Hall building - which had been severely damaged during an air strike in World War II. The newly established retail market boasted not only a general section with 154 stalls but also a separate fish and poultry section housing an additional 42 stalls. The photograph beautifully showcases this bustling hub of commerce and food trade. It is fascinating to witness how this iconic shopping center evolved over time and became an integral part of everyday life for residents and visitors alike during the 1960s. A true testament to resilience and progress, this image serves as a reminder of both historical significance and community spirit within Birmingham's rich heritage.
