Laing Sports Ground, Rowley Lane, Elstree, Barnet, Greater London. Men competing in a sack race at a Gala Day held at the Laing Sports Ground at Elstree.
A Gala Day was held by Laing at the Laing Sports Ground on 14th June 1969, as a replacement of the annual Sports Day. Sports events were held by the Sports Club, which included hockey, tennis, bowls, and football tournaments. A traditional English fete programme featured coconut shies, bingo, pony rides, catering and a beer tent, candy floss, and roundabouts. The day ended with a beauty contest, prize draw, and the election of Miss Sports Club. In the evening there was a firework display and a gala dance which continued until midnight

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of pure joy and friendly competition at the Laing Sports Ground in Elstree, Greater London. The year is 1969, and men of all ages are eagerly participating in a sack race during the Gala Day organized by Laing. The atmosphere is filled with excitement as participants jump inside their sacks, determined to reach the finish line first. Spectators cheer them on, their faces beaming with delight. This event was held as a replacement for the annual Sports Day and showcased various sports tournaments such as hockey, tennis, bowls, and football. But this day was more than just about sports; it was a traditional English fete complete with coconut shies, bingo games, pony rides, delicious catering options from food stalls and even a beer tent. Children enjoyed candy floss while others took thrilling rides on roundabouts. As dusk settled in over the Laing Sports Ground, festivities continued with a beauty contest followed by an enchanting firework display that lit up the night sky. The celebrations reached their peak at midnight when everyone danced together at the gala dance. This print not only captures an exciting sporting moment but also reflects the spirit of community engagement and enjoyment that characterized events like these in 1960s England. It serves as a nostalgic reminder of simpler times when people came together to celebrate life's simple pleasures.
