Royal Tweed Bridge UXC01_01_01_0696_23

Royal Tweed Bridge, Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Northumberland, 1955-1980. A view of the underside of the Royal Tweed Bridge, showing the four ribs supporting each arch. The Royal Tweed Bridge was constructed with reinforced concrete and dressed stone, between 1925 and 1928. The designers were L. G. Mouchel and Partners, and the contractors were Holloway Brothers, with assistance from consulting engineers Colonel C. H. Bressey and Mr J. H. Bean. The road bridge has four arches, three of which span the river, and the end two act as approaching viaducts. It is 430m long, and the span of the arches increases towards the north bank. Each arch is supported by four ribs and vertical columns that connect at the top by longtidudinal beams and transverse beams, which form the road. At the time of building, this bridge had the longest reinforced concrete arch in Britain

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing underside of the Royal Tweed Bridge in Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Northumberland. Built between 1925 and 1928, this architectural marvel showcases a stunning display of reinforced concrete and dressed stone craftsmanship. Designed by L. G. Mouchel and Partners, with assistance from consulting engineers Colonel C. H. Bressey and Mr J. H. Bean, this road bridge spans across the river with its four majestic arches. Three of these arches elegantly stretch over the flowing waters while the end two act as impressive approaching viaducts. Measuring an impressive length of 430 meters, it is worth noting that this historic bridge boasts Britain's longest reinforced concrete arch at the time of construction. The true beauty lies within its intricate support system - each arch is gracefully upheld by four ribs and vertical columns that seamlessly connect at their tops through longitudinal beams and transverse beams to form a sturdy road above. Ursula Clark's masterful photography allows us to appreciate every detail of this engineering marvel from a unique perspective, showcasing both strength and elegance in one frame. With its rich history dating back to the mid-20th century, this print serves as a timeless reminder of human ingenuity blending harmoniously with nature's grandeur along the Royal Tweed Bridge.
