Old bridge and Aqueduct OFH01_01_01_f02_01
Old Putney Bridge, Putney, Wandsworth, Greater London. The view from St Mary's Church tower in Putney looking across Thames towards Fulham with pedestrians on the old Putney Bridge to the right and the aqueduct crossing to the left.
Putney Bridge, also known as Fulham Bridge, dated from 1729. It was badly damaged by a river barge in 1870. Despite repairs, its days were numbered and in 1880 work began on a replacement. Shortly after completion of the new crossing in 1886, the old bridge, seen here, was demolished. The new bridge followed the line of the aqueduct seen to the left.
The photographer, William Field said of this view: "This was a pretty view one had from St Mary's Tower unique in its colour and quaintness. The curve of the old bridge as it enters Puteny High Street can be seen and was respectively regarded by coach drivers. There used to be very good dace fishing round the piers."The view from St Mary's Church tower in Putney looking across Thames towards Fulham with pedestrians on the old Putney Bridge to the right and the aqueduct crossing to the left

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the charm and history of the Old Putney Bridge in Wandsworth, Greater London. Taken from St Mary's Church tower in Putney, the view showcases pedestrians strolling across the old bridge to the right, while an aqueduct gracefully crosses to the left. Dating back to 1729 and also known as Fulham Bridge, this iconic structure suffered significant damage from a river barge in 1870. Although repairs were made, its fate was sealed, and construction on a replacement began in 1880. Once completed in 1886, this new crossing followed the path of the aqueduct seen on the left side of this image. Renowned photographer William Field described this view as "unique in its colour and quaintness". The curve of the old bridge as it enters Putney High Street is visible and was highly regarded by coach drivers at that time. Additionally, fishing enthusiasts would flock to these piers for excellent dace fishing opportunities. Through Field's lens, we are transported back in time to witness a picturesque scene that perfectly encapsulates both architectural beauty and historical significance. This print serves as a testament to London's rich heritage and reminds us of how structures evolve over time but continue to leave lasting impressions on those who encounter them.
