EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving, Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, also known as Carolus IV Bohemus and King of Bohemia, is depicted in regal splendor. The image, taken from Abraham Bogaert's "De Roomsche Monarchy," or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697, showcases the emperor's classical portrait, which embodies the Caesars and Kaisers of ancient Rome. Charles IV, born in 1316, ruled the Holy Roman Empire from 1347 until his death in 1378. He is shown here wearing the imperial crown, a symbol of his authority and power, atop his head. In his right hand, he holds an orb, a traditional attribute of monarchs, representing their power and sovereignty over their realm. In his left hand, he grasps a scepter crowned with a cross, symbolizing his role as both a secular and spiritual leader. The emperor's attire is adorned with the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious and influential chivalric order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The order's emblem, a golden fleece, is visible on the emperor's robe, signifying his membership and high esteem within the organization. Charles IV is also depicted wearing a token or coin on a chain around his neck, possibly representing the Kingdom of Bohemia, which he ruled. The token bears the image of St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia, symbolizing the emperor's connection to the Czech lands and their people. The emperor's portrait is further enhanced by the presence of a dagger, which may symbolize his readiness to defend his realm and its people. The overall composition of the engraving exudes a sense of power, authority, and grandeur, reflecting the importance and influence of the Holy Roman Emperor during the late Middle Ages.
