Commerce Festivals Fish Fishing And Fisheries Occupations Shows Victorian

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grand entrance of the Cornwall County Fisheries Exhibition in Truro, Cornwall. The exhibition, held from July to August 1893, was a celebration of fishing and fisheries in the region. The castellated entrance stands proudly at the top of Lemon Street, welcoming visitors with its intricate design. Beneath the archway, we can see the Royal Coat of Arms for the United Kingdom, symbolizing unity and strength. Above it are emblems representing Scotland (the Lion Rampant), Ireland (the Celtic harp), and the Imperial Crown. Three flags flutter in the breeze, including the iconic Union Jack flag at its center. These symbols evoke a sense of national pride that must have filled those who attended this remarkable event over a century ago. Interestingly, an advert placed in The Cornishman on September 7th, 1893 mentions that materials used for constructing these impressive exhibition buildings would be sold by public auction later that month. This glass lantern slide is part of a series documenting various aspects of this historic Fisheries Exhibition. Although we do not know who captured this particular moment through their lens, their work allows us to glimpse into Victorian-era Cornwall - a time when commerce thrived alongside traditional occupations like fishing. Displayed here at Royal Cornwall Museum as part of our extensive collection on local history and culture, this print serves as a testament to our rich maritime heritage and reminds us how exhibitions like these played an essential role in showcasing regional industries to wider audiences
