Alexander Yakovlev, aircraft designer
Alexander Sergeyevich Yakovlev (1906-1989), Soviet aircraft designer, in military uniform and holding an aircraft model. In 1932, Yakovlev founded what became the the Yakovlev design bureau. Between 1940 and 1946, as a minister in the aviation industry, he was close to Stalin and influential in deciding which designs would be accepted. He received numerous awards, including ten Orders of Lenin, and seven State Prizes of the USSR. He is seen here in his uniform as Major General of the Soviet Engineering and Technical Service.
