Disused hardened aircraft shelter

Hardened aircraft shelter. A disused Hardened Aircraft Shelter (HAS) at a Polish air base. Such shelters were built during the early 1970s to protect fighter and strike aircraft from damage during an air raid. Built of stressed concrete, these shelters could survive a direct hit by a small bomb (about 250kg) or a near miss by one slightly larger. They were also designed to protect the crew from chemical or biological attack and nuclear fallout. Camouflage and covering with grass and trees made them difficult to spot. The development of precision guided bombs toward the end of the 20th century rendered such shelters useless and other techniques of dispersal had to be adopted. Photographed at the Koszalin air base on the Baltic coast, one of the potential sites for a planned US missile defence system

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a disused hardened aircraft shelter at a Polish air base, showcasing the remnants of an era when protection and defense were paramount. Constructed in the early 1970s, these shelters were designed to safeguard fighter and strike aircraft from potential damage during air raids. Crafted with stressed concrete, they boasted remarkable resilience against direct hits by small bombs or near misses by slightly larger ones. Not only did these shelters provide physical security but also shielded crews from chemical or biological attacks as well as nuclear fallout. Ingeniously camouflaged with grass and trees, they blended seamlessly into the landscape, making them incredibly difficult to spot. However, advancements in precision guided bombs towards the end of the 20th century rendered these once-impregnable structures obsolete. As technology evolved, alternative dispersal techniques had to be adopted for enhanced safety measures. Photographed at Koszalin air base on Poland's Baltic coast – one of the potential sites considered for a planned US missile defense system – this image serves as a poignant reminder of how military strategies have shifted over time. It symbolizes both the ingenuity behind constructing bombproof shelters and their eventual demise due to changing warfare tactics. Through this photograph, Science Photo Library encapsulates not just history but also highlights mankind's relentless pursuit of safety amidst ever-evolving threats.
