Gypsum storage at a power station

Gypsum storage at a power station. Piles of limestone and gypsum inside a storage building at a coal-fired power station. Gypsum (calcium sulphate) is a byproduct of the scrubbers used to clean sulphur dioxide from the smoke produced by burning coal. This is the Drax power station near Selby, North Yorkshire, UK. As of 2006, Drax is the largest, cleanest and most efficient of the UKs coal-fired power stations. It can burn 36, 000 tones of coal a day to produce 4, 000 megawatts of power, around 7% of the UKs electricity needs. It was built from 1974-1986. For an external view of the gypsum storage building, see T190/445

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the impressive gypsum storage at a coal-fired power station in North Yorkshire, UK. Inside the storage building, towering piles of limestone and gypsum create a mesmerizing sight. Gypsum, also known as calcium sulphate, is a valuable byproduct of the scrubbers used to cleanse sulphur dioxide from coal smoke. The Drax power station, where this photograph was taken, stands as an emblem of efficiency and cleanliness among the UK's coal-fired power stations. With its ability to burn an astounding 36,000 tonnes of coal daily, it generates an impressive 4,000 megawatts of power – fulfilling approximately 7% of the country's electricity needs. Constructed between 1974 and 1986, Drax represents cutting-edge technology in energy production during the late 20th century. Its commitment to clean energy practices is evident through its use of flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) systems that minimize pollution caused by fossil fuels. As we gaze upon this image showcasing industrial prowess and technological advancements in energy production, it serves as a reminder that even amidst our reliance on fossil fuels for electricity generation in the past century; efforts were made to mitigate their environmental impact. The presence of this massive gypsum storage facility symbolizes both progress and responsibility towards cleaner energy sources for future generations.
