Across centre is an adrenal gland (dissected at right). At bottom, a vertical section of a kidney shows internal structure. This anatomical artwork is plate 306 from volume 5 of Manuel d anatomie descriptive du corps humain (1825). This 5-volume anatomy atlas was produced by French physician and surgeon Jules Germain Cloquet (1790-1883). The illustrations were by Haincelin. EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork showcases the intricate anatomy of the kidneys, a vital component of the human excretory system. The print, taken from volume 5 of Manuel d anatomie descriptive du corps humain (1825), was meticulously crafted by French physician and surgeon Jules Germain Cloquet in collaboration with talented illustrator Haincelin. At first glance, one is drawn to the prominent brown structures at the top - the left and right kidneys. Delicately depicted arteries in vibrant red intertwine with veins in calming blue hues, emphasizing their crucial role in maintaining proper kidney function. Adjacent to these organs are ureters, represented by elegant white lines that transport urine from each kidney to the bladder. The adrenal glands, situated atop each kidney like protective sentinels, are portrayed as creamy-colored orbs. A dissected adrenal gland on the right provides a closer look into its internal composition. Moving towards the bottom half of this remarkable illustration reveals a vertical section showcasing the intricate internal structure of a kidney. Here we witness an exquisite interplay between cortical and medullary regions within this essential organ. As an invaluable resource for medical professionals and enthusiasts alike, this historical artwork offers profound insights into our understanding of renal physiology during that era. It serves as a testament to both scientific progress and artistic brilliance encapsulated within one frame.
