Garnerin descending in his parachute, Paris
Garnerin descending in his parachute, with his discarded balloon on the left. Claimed to be the first to descend from a balloon by means of a parachute. Although parachutes had for a long time been used for the purpose of sending down cats and dogs from balloons to amuse the crowds, it was not until this date that Garnerin cut himself away from his hydrogen balloon (seen on the left) over Paris at 3, 000 feet, and descended safely.
