Temple of a Thousand Roosters, Wat Thammikarat, Ayutthaya, Thailand - 7 Jul 2017

Rooster or cock statues at Wat Thammikarat Temple in Ayutthaya, Thailand. Legend has it that in the 16th century Burma and Thailand fought and when Burma won, Ayutthaya which was then the capital of Thailand, became a vassal state of Burma. The Thai Prince, Naruesan, who later became King of Thailand, was taken to Burma to ensure that the Thai king they installed, King Maha Thammaracha, stayed loyal to Burma. However, Ayutthaya was supposedly freed from Burmese rule when Prince Naruesans rooster won a cock fight against a Burmese Prince where Ayutthaya was the prize. Since then, roosters have appeared as gifts and offerings at temples all over Ayutthaya with Wat Thammikarat being one of the most popular making it the Temple of the Thousand Roosters
