EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, titled "Exmoor RAF_540_846_PFFO_0112" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the untouched beauty of County Gate and Cosgate Hill in Exmoor, Devon. Taken by the Royal Air Force in August 1952, this image showcases the rugged charm of an unaltered moorland landscape before any improvements or forestry planning took place. The vastness of this rural expanse is truly awe-inspiring. From above, one can appreciate the undulating contours of the land as it stretches out towards the horizon. The patchwork quilt-like pattern created by fields and meadows adds a touch of serenity to this otherwise wild terrain. Nature's handiwork is evident throughout; dense clusters of trees dotting the landscape provide shelter for wildlife, while winding rivers carve their way through valleys with graceful elegance. This snapshot captures a moment frozen in time when man had yet to leave his mark on these rolling hills. As we gaze upon this historic print from Historic England Archive, we are reminded that there is something inherently magical about capturing landscapes from above. It allows us to see our world from a different perspective – one that unveils hidden treasures and reveals nature's grandeur in all its glory. In preserving images like these, we honor not only our past but also remind ourselves of our responsibility to protect and cherish these natural wonders for future generations to enjoy.
