Nepalese are an ethnic group native to the South Asian country of Nepal, and are predominantly Hindu and speak a variety of languages, including Nepali, Maithili, Bhojpuri and Tharu. The population of Nepal is estimated at around 28 million people, with the majority living in rural areas. Nepalese culture is heavily influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism, with many festivals celebrated throughout the year. The national language is Nepali but many other languages are also spoken in different parts of the country. Music and dance are important aspects culture as well as art forms such as wood carving and metalwork. The economy of Nepal is largely agricultural-based but there has been some industrialization in recent years. Tourism has also become increasingly important to the economy due to its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Nepal has made great strides towards gender equality over recent decades; women now have equal rights under law and access to education opportunities that were previously unavailable to them. Despite this progress there remains much work to be done in order for all citizens to benefit from these advances equally regardless of gender or social status.
