Through the decades, waste disposal has evolved from the traditional chute system of Ossulston Estate, where residents emptied their rubbish into containers for the dustmen to collect, to the modern landfill sites we see today. In this image, a bulldozer works tirelessly to compact and level the ever-growing mound of refuse at a landfill site (Landfill 33962_005). The transformation from the black and white image of a woman emptying her rubbish into a chute in 1936 (Ossulston Estate: woman emptying rubbish into a chute, 1936) to the present day's industrial-scale waste management is a testament to our society's progress. However, as we continue to generate more waste, it is crucial that we remain mindful of the environmental impact of our disposal methods and strive for more sustainable solutions.
