The toll house, a historical symbol of transportation and commerce, holds a fascinating story within its walls. From the Fulham toll house OFH01_01_01_f02_16 to the Toll House on Putney Bridge in London, these structures have witnessed centuries of human activity. Designed by Claude Nicolas Ledoux for the Wall of Fourteen Barriers, these toll houses served as important checkpoints along major routes. The Putney toll booth OFH01_01_01_f01_20 and the Fulham toll booth OFH01_01_01_f01_19 were crucial points where travelers paid their dues before continuing their journeys. In Old Putney, an intriguing black-and-white photograph captures the essence of an era gone by - an image that transports us back to simpler times when horse-drawn carriages passed through this very spot. Meanwhile, another striking engraving depicts the Toll-House near Gloucester tragically struck by lightning, reminding us of nature's unpredictable power. Moving further afield from London, we encounter architectural marvels like The Barriere de La Villette (1784-87) and Barriere du Faubourg Saint-Martin (1809). These impressive structures showcase both pencil sketches and colored aquatints that highlight their grandeur. A canal scene emerges with buildings lining its banks - among them stands a humble yet significant toll house alongside a charming toll bridge. This picturesque setting invites contemplation about how such small structures played vital roles in facilitating trade and travel during earlier times. Lastly, we stumble upon Bristol Riots: Burning Toll House on Prince Street Bridge (c. 1832), depicted in oil on paper. This haunting artwork serves as a reminder that even seemingly mundane buildings can become symbols of resistance or targets during moments of social unrest. From bustling city streets to serene countryside landscapes, these diverse glimpses into various toll houses across history unveil stories waiting to be explored.
