The Virgin Islands are a group of islands located in the Caribbean Sea, east of Puerto Rico. The islands are divided into two groups: the British Virgin Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The British Virgin Islands consist of four main islands – Tortola, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda – as well as more than 50 smaller islets and cays. The U.S. Virgin Islands include St Croix, St John and St Thomas, along with Water Island and several other small islets and cays. The climate in the area is tropical with temperatures ranging from 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit year round; however, they can be quite humid during certain times of the year due to its proximity to the ocean. Both groups of islands offer stunning beaches with crystal clear waters perfect for swimming or snorkeling; there are also plenty of opportunities for sailing or kayaking around these beautiful Caribbean destinations. The culture in both sets of islands is a mix between African-Caribbean influences as well as European influences due to their colonial history; this makes for an interesting blend that visitors will find fascinating. In addition to its natural beauty, there are many activities available on both sets of islands such as shopping at local markets or exploring historical sites like Fort Christian on St Thomas or Callwood Rum Distillery on Tortola which date back hundreds of years.
