Great Eastern under construction AL0327_033_01

Millwall, London. Isambard Kingdom Brunels steamship Great Eastern, built between 1854 and 1858, was by far the largest ship of her time with a gross tonnage of 18, 915. Designed to carry up to 4, 000 passengers between England, the Far East and Australia without refuelling, Great Eastern was the first ship to have a double-skinned hull. The construction of the vessel at Millwall attracted huge public interest, and it was famously photographed by Robert Howlett as well as by Joseph Cundall. Despite acute financial difficulties, and failed launches in November 1857, Great Eastern was eventually launched in January 1858. Joseph Cundall (1818-'95) albumen print from May 1855

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring construction of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's steamship, the Great Eastern, in Millwall, London. Built between 1854 and 1858, this magnificent vessel was truly a marvel of its time. With an astounding gross tonnage of 18,915, it surpassed all other ships in size during that era. Designed to transport up to 4,000 passengers on long voyages from England to the Far East and Australia without refueling, the Great Eastern boasted an innovative double-skinned hull. This groundbreaking feature ensured both strength and safety for those aboard. The construction process at Millwall drew immense public attention as people marveled at the sheer scale and ambition of this project. Renowned photographers Robert Howlett and Joseph Cundall immortalized this historic moment through their lenses. Despite facing significant financial challenges along with failed launch attempts in November 1857, the Great Eastern finally took to water in January 1858. Its successful launch marked a triumph over adversity and solidified its place in maritime history. This remarkable albumen print by Joseph Cundall from May 1855 serves as a testament to the ingenuity and determination behind this iconic ship's creation. Preserved by Historic England, it stands as a reminder of Victorian-era engineering prowess and continues to inspire awe today.
