EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithographic print, titled "Shri Sheshanarayana, Vishnu Narayana on Shesha" takes us back to the 19th century in India. Created by an unknown artist in 1886, this artwork showcases a mesmerizing scene filled with divine beings and mythical creatures. At the center of the composition stands Lord Vishnu Narayana, one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. He is depicted riding atop Shesha, a majestic serpent who serves as his loyal vahana (vehicle). The vibrant colors used in this lithograph bring life to every detail - from the intricate patterns adorning their garments to the shimmering waters of the river flowing beneath them. Surrounding Vishnu are various other gods and goddesses. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, stands gracefully beside him while Hanuman, known for his strength and devotion, pays homage at his feet. Narada Muni can be seen playing soul-stirring melodies on his sitar nearby. The presence of Garuda, a half-man half-eagle creature who acts as Vishnu's mount and protector against evil forces adds another layer of symbolism to this enchanting image. This chromolithograph not only captures religious iconography but also provides insight into Indian culture during that era. It is now part of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection where it continues to inspire awe among visitors with its rich heritage artistry.
