EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Steel House, located in Redcar and Cleveland. Serving as the headquarters for the British Steel Corporation, this architectural marvel was constructed between 1974 and 1977 by Laing. The main office buildings consist of four nested hexagonal sections, each boasting a unique elevation that adds to its visual allure. Adjacent to these structures is the computer building, also hexagonal in plan, seamlessly connected to the main complex. The exterior of Steel House is adorned with precast concrete panels resembling a brick finish effect, while steel panels grace the computer building. This combination of materials creates an intriguing contrast against the backdrop of water reflections captured in this image from Historic England Archive. Transporting us back to the vibrant atmosphere of the 1970s, this photograph exudes nostalgia and captures a moment frozen in time. It serves as a testament to both architectural ingenuity and industrial progress during that era.
