RMS Aquitania BL26730_002

RMS AQUITANIA. Interior view towards the fireplace in the Palladium Lounge. The Aquitania was launched in 1913 as the third of the Cunard Line express ocean liners (after the Mauretania and Lusitania), and the last four-stack liner to be built. She could carry over 2000 passengers on Cunards weekly transatlantic service. Photographed here by Bedford Lemere, in August 1923 probably during a stop-over and refit in Southampton

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the elegant Palladian Lounge of the RMS Aquitania, as captured in this stunning photograph by Bedford Lemere in August 1923. The Aquitania, launched in 1913, was the third express ocean liner for the Cunard Line and the last to feature four funnels. With a capacity to carry over 2000 passengers, this grand vessel was a marvel of maritime engineering. The Palladian Lounge, named for its Palladian-inspired architecture, is a testament to the opulence and sophistication of ocean travel during this era. The room is adorned with ornate decorative elements, including intricately carved pillars, luxurious upholstered chairs, and a grand fireplace, all bathed in the warm glow of table lamps. The furniture in the lounge is arranged to encourage relaxation and conversation, making it an ideal space for passengers to unwind during their transatlantic voyage. The polished wood tables, with their crisp white tablecloths and gleaming silverware, are set for afternoon tea or perhaps a post-dinner liqueur. The Aquitania's refined interiors were designed to provide passengers with a sense of comfort and luxury, making their journey across the Atlantic an unforgettable experience. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when ocean travel was an adventure in elegance and style.
