Odeon Leicester Square NWC01_01_1857
ODEON CINEMA, LEICESTER SQUARE, CITY OF WESTMINSTER, GREATER LONDON. A decorated safety screen, with the Compton organ console in front, in the darkeneded auditorium of the Odeon Cinema.
The Leicester Square Odeon Cinema opened in November 1937 and was the flagship cinema in the Odeon chain. The interior has been altered and renovated numerous times over the 20th and 21st centuries. Alterations in 1967 removed many original features; the painted safety curtain is one of the few original fixtures to have been retained. In 2020, the organ was one of three Compton organs remaining in operating cinemas, the others being in the Plaza Cinema, Stockport, and the Odeon Cinema, Weston-super-Mare. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting atmosphere of the Odeon Cinema in Leicester Square, City of Westminster, Greater London. Stepping into this grand movie palace feels like stepping back in time to its opening in November 1937. As you enter the darkened auditorium, your eyes are immediately drawn to a beautifully decorated safety screen that stands proudly at the front. The Compton organ console sits gracefully before it, ready to fill the space with melodic tunes. Over the years, this iconic cinema has undergone various alterations and renovations; however, some original features have managed to withstand the test of time. One such feature is the painted safety curtain that adds a touch of nostalgia amidst modern changes. It's fascinating to note that in 2020, this Compton organ was one of only three remaining in operating cinemas across England. The others could be found at Plaza Cinema in Stockport and Odeon Cinema in Weston-super-Mare. The art deco design elements throughout the interior create an ambiance that transports visitors back to a golden era of cinema-going. Shades of red and orange dominate the color palette, adding warmth and vibrancy to every corner. This remarkable print by Norman Walley serves as a testament to both architectural beauty and cinematic history preserved within these walls.
