Finsbury Park Cinema BL26835

Finsbury Park Cinema, 269 Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park, Haringey, Greater London.
The original cinema building at 269 Seven Sisters Road opened as Pykes Cinematograph in 1909. The much larger Rink Cinema stood directly behind this building at 10 Stroud Green Road. In 1920 the two were combined under the name of the Finsbury Park Cinema (later reverting back to the Rink Cinema), with Pykes cinema becoming a grand foyer and the auditorium located in the original Rink building

1920s Cinema

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Finsbury Park Cinema, located at 269 Seven Sisters Road in Finsbury Park, Haringey, Greater London. Originally known as Pykes Cinematograph when it first opened its doors in 1909, this building served as a testament to the early days of cinema. Behind this modest structure stood the grand Rink Cinema on Stroud Green Road. In 1920, these two cinemas merged under the name of Finsbury Park Cinema before eventually reverting back to its original name, Rink Cinema. The transformation involved converting Pykes into an elegant foyer while preserving the auditorium within the original Rink building. The photograph beautifully captures the essence of this bygone era with its vintage charm and architectural details. Adolphe Augustus Boucher skillfully immortalized this iconic landmark through his lens, allowing us to glimpse into a time when going to the movies was a cherished experience. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back to a bustling neighborhood where locals flocked to catch their favorite films on silver screens. It serves as a reminder of how cinema has evolved over time and continues to be an integral part of our cultural heritage. This print is not just a piece of history; it is also an invitation for us to appreciate and preserve these architectural gems that hold stories from generations past.
