Finsbury Park Cinema, 269 Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park, Haringey, Greater London. The luncheon room, photographed in 1923.
The original cinema building at 269 Seven Sisters Road opened as Pykes Cinematograph in 1909. The much larger Rink Cinema stood directly behind this building at 10 Stroud Green Road. In 1920 the two were combined under the name of the Finsbury Park Cinema (later reverting back to the Rink Cinema), with Pykes cinema becoming a grand foyer and the auditorium located in the original Rink building

This print takes us back to the year 1923, capturing a glimpse of the Luncheon Room at Finsbury Park Cinema in Greater London. The cinema building, originally known as Pykes Cinematograph when it first opened its doors in 1909, underwent significant changes over the years. Behind this structure stood the grand Rink Cinema on Stroud Green Road, which was eventually merged with Pykes to form the Finsbury Park Cinema. In this particular image, we see the transformed Pykes cinema serving as an elegant foyer for moviegoers. The Luncheon Room exudes a sense of timeless charm with its ornate decor and inviting atmosphere. It is easy to imagine patrons gathering here before or after enjoying a film screening in the auditorium located within the original Rink building. Photographed by Adolphe Augustus Boucher, this snapshot offers a fascinating window into early 20th-century entertainment culture. While we cannot witness any specific commercial activity taking place within these walls from this still frame alone, it serves as a testament to how cinemas were evolving during that era.
