Odeon Cinema Chester NWC01_01_0157
Odeon Cinema, Northgate Street, Chester. The Odeon Cinema at dusk, showing the illuminated porch, billboards and neon sign, viewed from the south-east.
The Odeon Cinema in Chester was designed by Harry Weedon and Robert Bullivant, and opened in 1936. The buildings design differed from typical Odeon cinemas: the Royal Fine Art Commission ruled that a tiled facia should not be used, so plain brick was used on the exterior. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless allure of the Odeon Cinema in Chester. As dusk settles over Northgate Street, the cinema's illuminated porch, billboards, and neon sign come to life, casting a warm glow on the bustling surroundings. Viewed from the south-east, this image offers a glimpse into a bygone era of cinematic grandeur. Designed by Harry Weedon and Robert Bullivant, this architectural gem opened its doors in 1936. Unlike other Odeon cinemas of its time, this particular building deviated from convention due to an intriguing ruling by the Royal Fine Art Commission. Instead of using a tiled facade as was customary for Odeon cinemas, plain brick was employed on its exterior. The Odeon Cinema stands as a testament to both art deco design and 20th-century entertainment culture. It has been witness to countless movie screenings that have left audiences enthralled throughout history. Its presence continues to evoke nostalgia and admiration among visitors who appreciate its unique charm. This remarkable photograph by Norman Walley allows us to appreciate not only the architectural beauty but also serves as a reminder of how cinema has long been an integral part of our lives - transporting us into different worlds through storytelling and imagination.
