EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a bygone era at Finsbury Park Cinema in Greater London. The image showcases the ticket desks and concessions stands nestled within the entrance lobby, inviting moviegoers to indulge in an unforgettable cinematic experience. Originally known as Pykes Cinematograph, the cinema building at 269 Seven Sisters Road first opened its doors in 1909. Behind it stood the grand Rink Cinema on Stroud Green Road, which was later merged with Pykes under the name Finsbury Park Cinema (later reverting back to Rink Cinema). This amalgamation resulted in a magnificent transformation, with Pykes becoming an opulent foyer while preserving the auditorium located within the original Rink building. Transporting us back to the 1920s, this photograph encapsulates both nostalgia and architectural beauty. The intricate details of ticket booths and concession stands evoke a sense of anticipation and excitement that once filled these hallowed halls. It serves as a testament to Adolphe Augustus Boucher's keen eye for capturing historical moments through his lens. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of how cinemas have long been cherished communal spaces where dreams come alive on silver screens. Beyond its commercial use, this photograph invites us to appreciate not only its aesthetic charm but also its cultural significance as part of our shared heritage.
