Initial design for the Phoenicia BL29390
The Phoenicia Hotel, Valetta, Malta. A photographic reproduction of an architect's drawing of a proposed hotel in Malta. This hotel, designed by Claude W Ferrier, was probably never built. The name Carlton Hotel is just visible above the entrance bay. In 1928, when this photograph was taken of the design, the architect was partnered with William Bryce Binnie. Sadly Ferrier died in 1935, the same year the Phoenicia was commissioned. It was completed between 1936 and 1938 in a similar style to this drawing, with Binnie recorded as the sole Architect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the initial design for the Phoenicia BL29390, a grand hotel that was proposed to grace the city of Valetta in Malta. The architect's drawing, beautifully reproduced through photography, unveils an exquisite vision conceived by Claude W Ferrier. Although this architectural gem never came to fruition, its elegance and charm are palpable in every intricate detail. The photograph captures a moment frozen in time - 1928 - when Ferrier collaborated with William Bryce Binnie on this ambitious project. A faint glimpse of the name "Carlton Hotel" can be discerned above the entrance bay, hinting at an alternative identity for this magnificent structure. Tragically, fate dealt a cruel blow as Ferrier passed away in 1935, just before his dream could become reality. However, his legacy lived on through Binnie's unwavering determination to bring the Phoenicia Hotel into existence. Commissioned later that same year and completed between 1936 and 1938, it stands today as a testament to their shared vision. The art deco style prevalent throughout this drawing is reminiscent of the glamorous era of the 1920s. Its symmetrical lines and ornate embellishments evoke a sense of opulence and sophistication that would have undoubtedly made it an iconic landmark had it been constructed. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print not only immortalizes an unrealized masterpiece but also pays homage to two talented architects whose collaborative efforts shaped Malta's
