EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the opulence and grandeur of "The Red Room" at Bath House, located on 82 Piccadilly in London. The room is adorned with exquisite display cases showcasing a portion of Sir Julius Wernher's remarkable collection. Commissioned by Sir Julius himself, this photograph offers a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle he enjoyed as a result of his success in South African diamond mines and gold fields. Taken in March 1911 by renowned photographer H. Bedford Lemere, the image showcases the intricate details that made Bath House an architectural marvel during its time. The chandelier hanging from the ceiling adds to the overall splendor of this interior view, casting a soft glow over the room's rich furnishings. Sadly, Bath House met its demise when it was demolished in 1960, making this photograph even more significant as a testament to its former glory. It serves as both a historical record and an artistic masterpiece capturing one moment frozen in time. H Bedford Lemere's skillful composition allows us to appreciate not only the beauty within these walls but also provides insight into the extravagant tastes of high society during this era. This print stands as a reminder of how artistry can immortalize spaces that are no longer physically present, allowing future generations to appreciate their magnificence for years to come.
