EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of opulence and grandeur within the Red Room at Bath House, located on Piccadilly in London. Taken by renowned photographer H Bedford Lemere in March 1911, this image offers a glimpse into a world long gone. The focal point of the room is undoubtedly the magnificent fireplace that stands proudly against one wall. Its intricate design showcases exquisite craftsmanship, with ornate carvings adorning its majestic structure. The fireplace exudes an air of sophistication and warmth, inviting guests to gather around its hearth for intimate conversations or moments of relaxation. Commissioned by Sir Julius Wernher, this photograph immortalizes a space that was once filled with laughter, elegance, and social gatherings. Bath House served as a hub for high society during its time but sadly met its demise when it was demolished in 1960. As we gaze upon this print today, we are transported back to an era where luxury reigned supreme. It serves as a reminder of the architectural treasures that have been lost over time but continue to captivate our imagination through photographs like these. This remarkable piece allows us to appreciate not only Lemere's skillful eye but also the beauty and history contained within each frame captured by Historic England.
