Arch Cathedral Medieval Nave Parish Church Victorian Arcade Perpendicular

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and historical significance of Wakefield Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Church of All Saints. Located in Kirkgate, Wakefield, this magnificent structure was originally a parish church before being granted cathedral status in 1888. The image showcases an interior view of the cathedral, looking north-west across the nave from the south aisle. The architectural brilliance is evident in every detail of this Victorian masterpiece. Sir George Gilbert Scott undertook extensive rebuilding work between 1858 and 1874, resulting in a stunning fusion of medieval and contemporary design elements. Within its walls lie remnants dating back to the 12th to 15th centuries, adding layers of history to this sacred space. One notable feature captured by this photograph is the alternating circular and octagonal piers supporting pointed arches along the south arcade. This intricate craftsmanship exemplifies Perpendicular Gothic style at its finest. Meanwhile, on the north side, circular and quatrefoil piers grace another set of arches. George Bernard Wood's expert photography skillfully immortalizes this iconic cathedral's beauty for all to admire. Through his lens, viewers can appreciate not only its architectural splendor but also sense its spiritual ambience that has endured throughout generations. This print serves as a testament to Wakefield Cathedral's timeless allure and stands as a remarkable tribute to both religious devotion and architectural excellence within England's rich heritage.
