Sainsbury Wing DP183694

Sainsbury Wing, National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, Westminster, Greater London. Completed in 1991, the Sainsbury Wing is the only work in Britain by Denise Scott-Brown and Robert Venturi, arguably the founders of Post-Modernism. After a controversial competition, Venturi, Scott-Brown and Associates were selected to design the extension, using Post-Modern devices in response to context. It was listed at Grade I in 2017

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Sainsbury Wing, a remarkable architectural masterpiece located in the heart of London's Trafalgar Square. Designed by Denise Scott-Brown and Robert Venturi, widely regarded as the pioneers of Post-Modernism, this extension stands as their sole creation in Britain. Completed in 1991, it represents an extraordinary blend of post-war and post-modern influences. The selection process for this project was not without controversy, but ultimately Venturi, Scott-Brown and Associates emerged victorious with their innovative design that harmoniously responds to its surroundings. The architects skillfully employed various Post-Modern devices to create a structure that seamlessly integrates into its context. In recognition of its exceptional architectural significance, the Sainsbury Wing was granted Grade I listing status in 2017. This prestigious accolade solidifies its place among Britain's most treasured buildings. Chris Redgrave's expertly captured photograph allows us to appreciate the intricate details and grandeur of this historic landmark. From its striking façade to its meticulously crafted interior spaces, every aspect exudes elegance and sophistication. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness a pivotal moment in architectural history. The Sainsbury Wing serves as a testament to the visionary minds behind it – individuals who dared to challenge conventional norms and redefine what is possible within contemporary design. Through Redgrave's lens, we are reminded of the enduring power of architecture – how it can shape our cities and leave an indelible mark on our cultural landscape. This print encapsulates not only a physical structure but also an artistic movement that continues to inspire generations beyond its completion over three decades ago.
