EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the relentless power of coastal erosion at Kilnsea, East Riding Of Yorkshire. The image showcases a hauntingly beautiful scene, where nature's forces have gradually eroded the once sturdy Easington Road and exposed a First World War Gun Emplacement on the beach. Taken in 2016 by renowned photographer Alun Bull, this snapshot serves as a poignant reminder of both the fragility of our coastline and its historical significance. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, revealing how concrete structures built for defense during WW1 now stand vulnerable to the unyielding sea. The juxtaposition between man-made fortifications and Mother Nature's indomitable force is strikingly evident in this image. As waves crash against these remnants of history, it becomes apparent that even our most resilient efforts can succumb to time and tide. Alun Bull's masterful composition not only highlights the destructive power of coastal erosion but also invites contemplation about humanity's relationship with nature. It prompts us to reflect on how we must adapt to these natural processes while preserving our heritage for future generations. This print from Historic England is more than just an aesthetically pleasing depiction; it encapsulates a story that transcends time itself. It reminds us that despite our best efforts to control or shape our environment, ultimately, we are mere spectators in the face of nature's grand design.
